It was exciting to be a part of the Let’s Move Festival in Columbia this weekend.

We had about 30 kids all hooping at the same time doing the Cha-Cha Slide. So Cute!

Great performance and silly sharing time with the kids. What a perfect day!

Cara Zara at the 2012 EVIE Awards

The International Special Events Society (ISES) recently celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Blake Hotel.

It was an honor to perform at the 2012 Events in Excellence (EVIE) celebration and awards ceremony.

This year’s EVIE Awards theme was Steampunk: “The Future of Yesterday”.

The atmosphere was over-the-top.

The designers, caterers, event and entertainment planners did a tremendous job transporting all the guests to a magical place.

A big “Thank You” to Key Signature Entertainment for including me in this adventure!

Laughing Hula Hoop Baby

This cute little baby giggle the same way I do when I’m hooping. It’s funny how he starts crying when the hoop stops.

Pi Day, Math and Hula Hoops

Posted in Hooping Basics by Cara Zara on March 14, 2012

On March 14th, math geeks, number lovers and students in Massillon Middle School’s eight grade classrooms in Massillon, Ohio, celebrated Pi Day. No, not the lemon meringue or banana creme kind of pie, we’re talking about a day set aside to honor the mathematical constant. It was about celebrating the 3.14 miracle number that helps to determine the area of circles and fits into geometrical formulas of all kinds. And what better day to celebrate pi — than on the 14th day of the third month (3.14)? Eighth grade teacher Debbie Tucker said, “It’s taken on a tradition all its own here… Every year the students remember that March 14 is ‘Pi Day.’ I think they will always remember that.” Instead of participating in traditional learning activities in their classrooms, students like Matthew Oliver (pictured) were engaged in hands-on activities and games that tied pi into every subject they study. Oliver is shown here measuring the diameter of a hula hoop in an experiment to determine Pi, which got us thinking about how the 3.14 miracle number relates to our circles and our spin.

Hula-Hooping with a Wheelchair

I was teaching one of my after school “Hula-Hoop Kid-Fit” classes when a little boy in a wheelchair entered the gym and said  with the saddest voice “I probably can’t do this class”. Enthusiastically I said “Sure you can! Let me get the class started and then I’ll teach you some tricks that you can do.” A few minutes later I returned to him and taught him some hand tricks and breaks that he could do while sitting and his face completely lit up. Then he said “Watch this! I just thought of a new trick!” and put the hoop around his neck like a necklace and spun his chair around until he had enough momentum to do the best neck stall I’ve ever seen. I’m so proud of his “Can-Do” attitude, his willingness to try and to expand how we all define “hula-hooping”.

For everyone who says “I can’t hoop!”  or “I can’t (insert any word here) — Please give it a try – you might discover something new about yourself.

Hamster Hula-Hoop

Posted in Inspirational Ideas by Cara Zara on March 4, 2012

A friend of mine posted this hamster hooping photo on my Facebook page the same day I brought home my daughter’s new pet hamster.

How funny! She didn’t even know we were getting one. What delightful timing!

My little girl’s two favorite things in one picture – hooping and hamster. I wish I had a picture of the smile on her face when she saw this!
